Meet Preview

Runningzone.com All-Star Showdown Preview

By: Jordan Schilit

It has been over a year since Joeseph Franklin blasted his 1:48 PR in the 800m. However, many may have overlooked the other superb performances that night including: six guys under 1:56 in the 800m, six other boys under 9:50 in the 3200m, and Ashley Brasovan out-kicking Emilie Amaro in the 3200m (10:21 to 10:28). With over 70 athletes attending the 2008 RunningZone.com All-Star showdown and the many PRs that thus proceeded, Holy Trinity Academy jumped for the opportunity of hosting lap 2.

This Saturday, several of the Florida’s finest will travel to Melbourne for the 2009 Runningzone.com All-Star showdown in hope of capturing new PRs and racing runners from other classifications during peaked fitness. Here is a highlighted preview of the meet, broken down by events (in order by the meet’s schedule):

Boys 200m

This race won’t quite fill up all eight lanes, but this race will be fast out front nonetheless. Khiry McQuay will be shooting for a low 21-second time, and several others are looking to break 22 seconds.

Entries:

- McQuay, Khiry 21.7

- Riggins, Curtis 22.5

- Courtoy, Ryan 22.9

- Rubinson, Evan 23.04

- King, Aaron 23.2

- Jones, Stacey 24

- Wainwright, Zachary 25

Boys One Mile

With the fastest PR (4:17) in this field, Ryan Courtoy hopes to over-take the high school scene and lead a strong group of underclassmen towards the 4:20 mark. The USF junior and Wharton-alum is one of only two competitors that has broken 4:20, but nonetheless is zoning in on a new PR under the lights at Holy Trinity.

Entries:

- Courtoy, Ryan 4:17

- Gleaton, Andrew 4:18:16

- Peliska, Taylor 4:22

- Federico, Bruce 4:25.98

- Amato, Tyler 4:26.08

- Davidson, Tyler 4:26.67

- McLeod, Jason 4:27.50

- Sykes, Martinique 4:28

- Ludwig, Daniel 4:31

- Pignatone, Ben 4:31

- Gousse, Ryan 4:35

- Dey, Daniel 4:35

- Shuey, Michael 4:36

- Greiner, Mike 4:37

- Quinn, Sean 4:37.05

- Castagnaro, Joey 4:38.30

- arjoon, nicholas 4:39

- Rivard, Connor 4:39

- DeJute, Marc 4:41

- Ortega, Alan 4:43

- Scott, Zach 4:45.50

- Albritton, Jan-M 4:46

- Horvath, Shawn 4:47

- Jean, Widmaier 4:48

- Geraci, Steven 5.01

- Falasiri, Shayan 5:05

- Suarez, Brandon 5:30

Girls One Mile

Although only having six competitors, the girls mile should still produce some fast times. Stephanie Strasser (5:00), Callie Cooper (5:10), Olivia Papa (5:11), and Mallory White (5:12) will all be aiming for the 5:00 barrier, hoping to record times among the most elite in Florida. Strasser, a junior at Fernandina Beach High School, hopes to add a 1600m title to her resume (since she has already won a 3200m State Championship). This is Callie’s last shot at breaking 5:00 before she heads off to college. The two other underclassmen superstars will also hope to prove themselves worthy of a 1600m title next year, starting with PRs on Saturday.

Entries:

- Strasser, Stephanie 5:00

- Cooper, Callie 5:10

- Papa, Olivia 5:11

- White, Mallory 5:12

- Huff, Teresa 5:25

- McLeod, Michelle 5:57

Boys 800m

With 15 runners already eclipsing the 2:00 barrier this season, the 800m will surely be a PR-friendly field. Darrin Gibson currently has the FL #1 time (1:52.60) this season, but will get company from Sheldon Williams, Cameron Dickerson, Dan Wehunt, and Andrew Charles – all of which have gone under 1:54. This should be a very exciting race and loaded with PRs because many of the sub-2:00 runners have been concentrating on their 4x8 squads – many are looking to run a fast 800 for their own benefit this time.

Entries:

- Gibson, Darrin 1:52.60

- Williams, Sheldon 1:52.13

- Dickerson, Cameron 1:52.56

- Wehunt, Daniel 1:53.8

- Charles, Andrew 1:53.89

- Albury, Austin 1:54.00

- McEnany, Mike 1:55.40

- Gines, Julian 1:57

- Courtoy, Ryan 1:57

- Jones, Ryan 1:57

- Trimble, Logan 1:57.94

- Albritton-Spain, Jan-M 1:58

- Probst, Tobias 1:59

- Jules, Richard 1:59.3

- Neal, Markais 1:59.7

- DeJute, Marc 2:01

- Sykes, Martinique 2:01

- Becker, Daniel 2:01.1

- Rubinson, Evan 2:01.80

- Hankerson, Treyon 2:02

- Pignatone, Ben 2:02

- Ortega, Alan 2:03

- Bermudez, Jonathon 2:03

- Riggins, Curtis 2:04.04

- Wainwright, Zachary 2:05

- Gibson, Terril 2:05

- Jones, Lionel 2:05

- Geraci, Steven 2:08

- Jones, Stacey 2:18.89

Girls 800m

Shelby Hayes (2:13 PR) is the clear favorite in this section of the 800m as she hopes to break the 2:10 barrier. However, Chelsi Woodruff and Mallory white have both eclipsed 2:20 and should give her company for at least most of this race. Mallory will be doubling, but Shelby and Chelsi will be fresh for this event.

Entries:

- Hayes, Shelby 2:13

- Woodruff, Chelsi 2:18.98

- White, Mallory 2:19

- Sandon, Holly 2:23.48

- Keiler, Hannah 2:37.22

- Mann, Karina 2:38

- Wahy, Brianna 2:40.85

Boys and Girls 5,000m

Most of the runners in this race haven’t raced a 5K on the road in a long time, let alone a 5K on an outdoor track. Derek Wehunt and Bret Butler are the two in this race that have gone under 15:30, and 6 others have broken 16:00. Several entrants are on the cusp of the 16:00 mark, with 14 total runners already recording sub-16:20 efforts. Derek Wehunt seems to be the clear favorite in this one with his 1:52/4:11/9:06 credentials, and will also be looking for redemption in his individual events after dropping the 1600m and 3200m at State. This field is very deep with 21 boys under 17:00; Kayla Hale will be looking to over-take as many of them as she can with hopes of going under 16:50.

Entries:

- Wehunt, Derek 15:25

- Butler, Bret 15:28.00

- Palmer, Jeffrey 15:30

- Courtoy, Ryan 15:34

- Dendor, Chris 15:45

Milk Mile

One of the new events of the evening will be the stomach-wrenching milk mile. The seed times are of course approximated, so no predictions based on statistics will be considered for this event. Some sub-4:30 and sub-4:20 milers will be in the mix, so some of the competitors may have shots at breaking 6:00, unless puking proves otherwise….
