In all seriousness though. Greetings from Southern California. Where the the sun is bright and "bra" is a greeting not womens underwear. I'm from the great city of Portland, OR but am currently attending school at the University of San Diego.

As a strapping young lad I always had dreams of being a spectacular runner. Climing into the upper eschelon of distance runner through hard work and determination....NOT! I was born to play basketball. Since the 3rd grade I had hooped it up. Starting with the most dominating YMCA NE Portland has ever known. I was set and contiued to play all the way up through my Freshman year of high shcool. The problem was, no ever told me that a short, skinny ass, white boy who couldn't jump high or sprint might not make it in this sport. I mean i seriously had the hand eye coordination off a eye patched Pirate w/a hook and the acceleration of a crippled sloth on Xanax.

I still kept at it however and in an effort to get in better cardio shape for the 2004-05 Basketball season, my dad suggested that I go out for Cross Country. Now, you must understand despite the fact that the year before our Central Catholic XC team won the state meet with all stars such as Galen Rupp, Kenny Klotz, and Scott Wall, I had no idea what the sport even was. Like I knew the guys faces and had been to track meets (I actually Long Jumped and Triple Jumped my Freshman year, another story) but no clue what XC really was.

So on September 1st, 2004 I jumped on the Whilsire Park bound XC Bus. I won't soon forget the first time I met Coach Alberto Salazar. I was introduced and one of the first things he says to me is "Nice to meet you, what is that you got on your shirt?" Not even registering the question he posed i stared blankly at this former marathon world record holder, in awe that I am getting the chance to meet such an athlete of this caliber. He paused a moment and pointed his finger repeating "Right there, what is that?"; not a move, frozen as a statue. He then retracted his finger and exclaimed "Ah see he didn't fall for it, pretty sharp"

My first race came a week after the attempted prank by Alberto, and I wasn't sure what to expect. It was the traditional kick-off to the Cross Country season, a 4xmile race at Centennial High School. I ran 5:32. I was the third slowest guy that day. Two months later I was the number nine guy on our team. At the conclusion of my senior year I held PR's of 4:12 in the 1500 and 9:01 in the 3k, and had been a member of the record setting OSAA Cross Country State Champs in '05 (23 pts), and then again in '06 (i was 56th and 18th, junior and senior year, respecively).

I am now running for the D1 Cross Country Program here as a Torero and am in the top 10 all time fastest 10m runners at the school. I have broken records on and off the track (most food eaten in an airport, participated in the World Record of the "Most Balloons Hats worn at one time", and many more).

Latest Blog Update

Starting the Year Off Right

Dear Running Dorks (I know I can address this to you because you are the only ones who would take the time to actually read a blog of some other runner...either that or you are a stalker, or a distant family member),

The year of 2009 is now upon us. I haven't the faintest whether this is the Chinese year of the bear, dragon, or naked mole rat. What I can say for certain is that this is the beginning of a promising new year. The track season is a few months away but let's not be fooled. Now is the time to be out there lacing up our Nikes, Asics, Brooks, Mizuno, or whatever brand tickles your fancy, and hitting the trail, pavement, snow, ice, heaven, and hell. I hate to sound like those cliché motivational posters but my best words of advice are, winning in the future is the culmination of hard work and perseverance of the past (can I trade mark that or something).

On top of my studies, my running, and my job I am going to use this blog to keep you all updated on the work I am doing to give myself a fighting chance at winning this year. I encourage you to not only follow me in my journey to become a better athlete, but I challenge you to use my struggles, pain, and achievements to fuel your hopes and dreams of being better.

A kid taking the road that has probably been taken before, just doing it in my own style,

Kevin O'Malley
