Who I Am...

I've been running for as long as I can remember. I joined the track & field team my freshman year as a sprinter, and high jumper, and I've been hooked since. I was a sprinter in college, and after college I joined the Army. I've gone from sprinting to long distance running, hoping to compete at the professional level in some sport or another after parting ways with the military in 2012. I've run 9 marathons in my life, and upon my return from Iraq at the end of the year, I'll be ready to take on my very first triathalon! I just love to compete. I love imput from other runners/athletes, and I have some training advice of my own to share. Hope to see you out on the road. But be careful.......Baby D is faster than she appears. ;).

My take on the Serena Williams "situation"

I just finished watching the video of Serena Williams' meltdown, and without question she was dead wrong. Now I've gotten that out of the way, I want to address what really disappoineted me, the comments that accompanied the video. I understand people have the right to say what they want, and they have every right to express their opinion. I dig that, I'm down with that,  in fact, I welcome it. But what do they say when a baseball player loses his composure, and is throwing baseball bats, and bases, and is in the face of an umpire screaming? Does anyone call for that player's head? Are they suspended? Or worse, does anyone start throwing around words like "ghetto"? My point isn't to defend what she did, or who she is as a person, because I don't know her personally. My beef is this firestorm of judgement and condemnation that has followed. People are so quick to rush to judgmet, and so reluctant to practice forgiveness. While she hasn't apologized, I doubt it would do much good if she did. Outcasting others makes some people feel better about themselves, and forgiveness is a virtue with sometimes a price too high. . A certain football player lost millions of dollars and spent time in jail for what he did. He was even blacklisted professionally BEFORE he was convicted of any crime. He has since apologized for his actions. Has he recieved much forgiveness? I wish I could say he has but that's not the case. Then again I think the protesters are just happy to have something to do on Sundays. On the same note another Super Bowl winning football player was accused of rape, and I don't think I heard too much about that at all. All the while Tupac turnin in his grave, and  Mike Tyson is fuming in the living room of his 1500 sq ft mansion. In the end this woman is human. She was losing, she wasn't playing her best, and she knew it. The lashing out at the line coach was an out for her. And what's with throwing kids into the mix, as far as her moral obligation to set an example on how to behave? I was under the impression that was the parent's job. Apparently Charles Barkley and Serena Williams aren't role models. I'm guilty of poor on-court conduct myself, being thrown out of a basketball game after a touch foul, when I was practically clotheslined by my defender on the previous play. My team still won, I had 18 points 9 assists and 4 steals, and nobody ever called me "ghetto".

I was not at the Texas Relays. I haven't actually high jumped since 2006. I run on my own a little, but that's it.

Capt. Pink - thanks for the comment, artful in itself! How's the Army treatin' you? My son (in profile pic) is in Army ROTC at Univ of Oregon (my alum) and talks of heading to Ranger school when he breaks free from college. We ran the Eugene marathon yesterday, his first, my ninth - always a challenge, with lessons and rewards. Thanks for your service, I'm learning more about the Army every day.....

Maybe it'll finally occur to the field maintenance guy that he need to open the restrooms for once! So you say "your knees will let you know when you're a distance runner". Are you having trouble with bringing your knees too high when you run? I have trouble not getting them high enough and that's why I run horribly slow times for the 1, 2 and 4.
empb28 (May 4 2009, 02:55 AM)
Was it pretty difficult to move up to marathons from sprint races? I once heard that a 100/200/400 runner would never be able to FINISH a 10K! I guess you've really proved them wrong.
