Who I Am...

Hi all you runners! My name is Dr. Kay Porter, and I am your new blogger for all things about motivation, mental training and finding your mental and psychological edge in your racing and training. I’m the author of an applied sport psychology book, THE MENTAL ATHLETE, (Human
Kinetics, 2003), which is available at your favorite bookstore or amazon.com. My website is: www.thementalathlete.com.

In the next few weeks and months, I’ll be putting out podcasts of guided visualizations for racing the 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 5000m, 10,000m and the marathon. Right now, we are busy putting these online for runners to download into their ipods or mp3s!

I look forward to hearing from you and want to help you have fun in your racing and to improve your PR! So stay tuned and look for sport psychology/mental training tips coming your way!
Kay

Hi everyone...I just wanted to let you know that over 30 pre-recorded visualizations are finally on my website for downloading into your ipods/mp3, etc. I've been busy working with runners and also writing a new book, which will be a sequel to THE MENTAL ATHLETE. I also had fun interviewing a number of elite athletes at the USAT&F championships in June in Eugene. The weather was perfect and the races exciting. Now on to the World Championships in Berlin! I, however, will be in Eugene, watching online or on TV!

In August one of my favorite things ever is hiking in the Oregon Cascades. There are zillions of hiking trails, mostly gorgeous with fantastic views of the mountains and streams. Yesterday I took my Spirited Walkers marathon group to Green Lakes at the base of the South Sister, a nice 9 mile round trip with 1100' elevation gain. There were a few runners running on the trail as well. Great aerobic training! This is what we live in Oregon for and how we endure all that rain during the winter and spring! Summers are beautiful here, to say the least! Of course, in Western Oregon summer starts July 5 and goes to about October 15 (a local joke, but true!).

Have a great rest of summer and enjoy it all! And remember to thank your body, mind and spirit for their health and vitality. Enjoy your runs! Being able to run is a wonderful gift from the universe, no matter how slow or fast you go. Gratitude is a key to living a happy life.
