Weekend Results for 4/21/12

Published by Martin Bingisser on Apr 23 2012, 12:43 PM

The domestic professional season started in earnest this past week with some of the first big head-to-head matchups on Saturday. The Mt. SAC Relays once again drew the best field, especially on the women's side. Jessica Cosby was looking to build on her near-US record in Arizona two weeks ago and took the early lead, but US indoor champion Amber Campbell took tossed a season's best in the fourth round for the win. Campbell and Cosby have faced each other 10 times since the 2008 Olympic Trials with each thrower wining five meets. It should be fun to watch as they build up to the 2012 Trials.

Sophie Hitchon threw a British record for third place and Britney Henry took fourth with her second straight meet over 70 meters. After an impressive result last weekend, Gwen Berry sturgled slightly and finished 11th. Ida Storm (UCLA) had the top collegiate mark of the meet with a personal best of 66.30m.

The Mt. SAC men's competition was dominated by foriegners after the late withdrawal of Kibwe Johnson (due to the birth of his daughter) and Drew Loftin (due to injury). Libor Charfreitag took the win with a throw of 75.01m, followed by top throwers from France and Great Britain. Michael Mai was the best American with a throw of 73.96m for fourth.

Across the country both Ryan Loughney (Ashland) and Alexander Ziegler (Virginia Tech) broke 70 meters to lead collegiate throwers. Another notable post-collegiate mark came from Chris Cralle who threw a personal best of 71.98m. Jeneva McCall (Southern Illinois) had the top women's collegiate mark with 66.63m. Alena Krechyk (Kansas) also improved her season's best with a 66 meter throw.
