Post Golden South Classic
What a great meet on Saturday for the 2012 Golden South Classic presented by adidas. We had the opportunity to broadcast the meet LIVE due to the great sponsoship from Track Shack and Pole Vault City. We saw some great events to include Lily Williams getting the win in the Golden Stripes qualifier for the Dream Mile in New York City winning in 4:46.15 (FL #2 All-time) and Tyreek Hill from Coffee County HS in Georgia blazing a 10.19 in the 100 and back to back 200's of 20.49 and US #2 All-time 20.14 capping off his 4th race of the night. There were several other outstanding events and we will continue to upload live race footage and plenty of great photos by Sherri Enders. Thanks to the entire crew that included Richard Thomas, Robert Brown, Dean Headley, Emily Headley and Sherri Enders. We hope everyone had a great Memorial Day and Memorial Day weekend.

The Real Maine
Wow. I was finally able to watch Erik van Ingen's documentary, "The Real Maine". I was instantly sent back in time to my college days as an aspiring distance runner at Miami-Dade and my time living amongst guys who shared the same vision although not necessarily the same drive to take it to the next level. If you've read "Running with the Buffaloes" or "Once a Runner", this is the 2012 version of those instant classics.
Here's my review that I posted on the video's website on Vimeo.com
An instant Classic.
The trials and tribulations of being a distance runner is graphically and wholeheartedly on display by these harriers. If you're a distance runner or know one, you can instantly connect and visualize their summer of comradeship and their quest to take it to the next level. With excellent cinematography, Erik van Ingen's documentary will forever be a part of your distance library and foot locker of knowledge.
Grab a good internet connection, your favorite beverage and snack and settle in for Erik's 40 plus minutes of great story-telling.

Bridget Blake and Golden South Tidbits
Cogratulations to Dr. Phillips Bridget Blake on being named the Orlando Sentinel's All-Central Florida Girls Track Athlete of the Year for 2012. As you know, Bridget was a Foot Locker Finalist and 4A State XC in the fall and repeated as the 4A Girls 1600 and 3200 meter champion this spring.
Well, the 36th Annual Bert M. Warden's Golden South Classic is this Saturday at First Academy. The fields are starting to look pretty intriguing especially when you consider an automatic berth to the for the June 9th Dream 100 or Dream Mile at the New York City Grand Prix is on the line.
The Girls Mile field right now has Lily Williams, Stefanie Kurgatt and Carmen Carlos as the 3 front-runners. To qualify for the auto to the Dream Mile, the competitors will need to win the Mile race and also dip below 4:50 or a converted 1600 time of 4:48.32 during the outdoor season. As of right now, Lily Williams (4:47.79) is the only competitor in the Girls field that has dipped below the qualifying standard, so if she wins outright, regardless of time, she will be on her way to New York City. I'm not sure Lily wants a slow pace knowing Stefanie is in the race so the tactics will be interesting to see on Saturday. Unlike the Dream Mile in the New York City, there isn't a dedicated rabbit in the race although I would really like to see one.
Andres Arroyo's situation is a little different. Although he has run 4:11.76, he needs to win outright and dip below 4:10 or be at the mercy of gaining an at-large bid which probably won't happen. I'm not this will happen, but it sure would be nice if someone was simply in the race to take the field through in 2:04 !

Oxy High Performance Meet
There was no lack of viewing options for the Oxy High Performance Meet last night to include watching it on DistancePreps.com as we embedded the RunnerSpace feed. The meet didn't disappoint with several high caliber performances and multiple A standards to include Ritz in the 5K and David Torrance in the 1500.
Florida's own Jackie Areson (Atlantic Delray 2006) had a superb race and a 4 second PR winning the Womens 5K in 15:14. Wouldn't it be great to see multiple Floridian's on this years Olympic Team !
You can check out the races and results at the Oxy link below:

Kali-Davis White added to adidas Grand Prix Dream 100
Everyone knows I love my Cobras, so it's especially great to see Boyd Anderson Junior sprint sensatation Kali-Davis White earn an at-large invite to the Dream 100 being held June 9th at the adidas Grand Prix New York City meet. If you're keeping count, that's 4 at-large Dream 100 bids for Florida sprinters and the case could be made for more. Besides earning an at-large bid, competitors can secure an automatic bid to compete in either the Dream 100 or the Dream Mile by winning one of three Golden Stripes qualifiers and meeting the time cut-off for the event (Dream 100 - 10.5 Boys, 11.7 Girls, Dream Mile - 4:10 Boy's, 4:50 Girls). Yes, we have several more Floridians who should be players for that field. The Dream 100 consists of 9 athletes and the Dream Mile, 14.

Kyle and Kyle
Today was a great day for the Cooke family as our Kyle graduated from Columbia University with a degree in Political Science and a minor in Economics. Congrats Kyle !
Rewind the clock 4 1/2 years to when Kyle was looking at schools as a senior in high school. He was very keen on attending Columbia and was even more so after talking to a fellow recruit named Kyle Merber from New York who pretty much sealed the deal for Kyle. Well, it's been an interesting last 24 hours. Kyle Merber ran a race last night in the 1500 at Swarthmore College in Philadelphia running a 7 second PR and becoming the American Collegiate Record holder and HEPS record holder when it was all said and done. His time of 3:35.59 leads the NCAA and is the #2 time ever for a collegian behind Villanova's Sydnee Maree's time of 3:35.30 set way back in 1981.
Needless to say, I'm very proud of our Kyle's accomplishments over the years as he has really enjoyed being a member of the Columbia Lions distance squad these last 4 years.
POST RACE INTERVIEW LINK with Kyle Merber where he discusses his team, his AcR, Regionals, Nats and the Trials.

3 Under 11...Again
A couple of weeks ago we did a story on the trio of Givens, Thomas and Williams from Chiles HS all going sub 11 in the same 3200 race at the FSU Relays which to our recollection was the first time we could ever remember that feat happening. Here's the link to the article:
Well, not to be outdone, the trio accomplished the same feat again at the State Meet 3A 3200. Well done:

Wow...what a great SEC Championship for Florida Senior Genevieve LaCaze first winning the 3000 Steeple in 10:13.99, just .26 off of the SEC record. She then followed up with wins in the 1500 going 4:13.44 and the 5K in 16:26.38. Her impressive 30 point performance secured the Commissioner’s Trophy and tied a Florida Gator Women's record for most points scored in the SEC Championships.
LSU won the Womens title with 161.5 points and Florida was 2nd with 138. The top ranked Men without Grey Horn (suspended DUI) and Jeff Demps (injured) were only able to post 93 goints for 4th. Arkansas Men won the SEC title going away with 196.

Remember this Name
Mary Cain, Sophomore, Bronxville NY. 2 days ago Mary Cain ran 2:03.34 at the 2012 Loucks Games. If you're keeping count, she now has nation leading times in the 800, 1500, Mile and 3K and we could very well hear her name called during the Olympic Trials next month. In looking at Mary Cain's NY State record setting performance, there is more in the tank.

State Meet Race Videos
The State Meet LIVE Broadcast was a production of Play On Sports in conjunction with the FHSAA and yours truly was the color commentator for all 4 Classes along with announcers Mike Ridaught (Class 1A/2A) and Marty Pallman (3A/4A). Play On had the exclusive rights to the broadcast and on-demand video and has initiated the arduous task of splicing the raw footage from the broadcasts into individual events and I expect that over the next several days, that process will be complete. These videos are available via their Youtube channel and can be embedded freely. Here is a good link for the State Meet Videos and interviews by Josh, Darrin, John and Dean along with the thousands of photos taken by Sherri Enders.

Thoughts on the 2012 FHSAA State Track and Field Meet
I thoroughly enjoyed the past 2 weekends at the new venue, Hodges Stadium, on the campus of the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. From a broadcast and media perspective, I was awed by the internet capabilities, sight lines, public adress system and the production team from Play On Sports that produced the Live Broadcast. This is the first year for the Championships at UNF and next year improvements will undoubtedly be made. It just felt like a Championship venue and I'm real eager to return to UNF for not only the State Championships, but any Track and Field events being held at the facility.
Next on tap for UNF is the NCAA East Regional, May 24-26th.
Another item for discussion - Qualifying standards for the State Series. I implore the FHSAA and FACA to debate the pro's and con's of coming up with a system that makes it plausible and fair to have the best fields present at the State Championships. I've heard several recommendations on how this can be done and would like to hear more. I think as a State we have the talent to take the State Series to next level of evolution.
