Results for the Weekend of 2/4/12
by Martin Bingisser With eight men over 21 meters this weekend and 15 women over 20 meters, the 2012 season is starting to gain speed. 2009 NCAA outdoor champion and 2011 outdoor runner-up Marcel Lomnicky (Virginia Tech) opened up his season with a personal best of nearly two meters. Lomnicky has traditionally stuggled indoors compared to the success he has had outdoors; last year he threw just 21.03 meters and placed 14th at the NCAA indoor championships. This new personal best ranks him first in the NCAA so far this season. Just one centimeter behind Lomnicky was his teammate Alexander Ziegler (Virginia Tech). Ziegler, who also set a personal best with his throw, has been on the podium at the last two NCAA indoor championships and won the NCAA outdoor meet in June. At the D2 ranks, Ryan Loughney (Ashland) also had a huge improvement at the Findlay Open. Loughney opened the season with a personal best in December, and added nearly one meter more at his second meet on Saturday. He leads D2, with his teammate Richard Quick (Ashland) in second. Quick also threw a big personal best over the weekend. Along with Matt Royer (Indianapolis) there are an impressive three D2 throwers over 21.50m this year. It has become a routine for Jeneva McCall (Southern Illinois), but she once again easily had the best mark of the weekend. Kelly Closse (Texas Tech) added a few feet to her personal best and became the third woman to reach the NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 21 meters this year. In the pro realm, world leaders A.G. Kruger (Nike) and Brittany Riley (Unattached) both broke 80 feet again. Michael Mai (US Army) improved his season best to 23.23m in Idaho and now ranks second in the world.
