The Woodlands, Texas - In the closest Conference USA Men's Cross Country Championship race
ever, UTEP edges 29th-ranked Tulsa by one point to win the 2009 title
Saturday at the Bear Branch Sportsfields in The Woodlands, Texas. In
muddy and sloppy course conditions, the Miners placed six runners among
the Top 12 for 31 points, while Tulsa had seven runners to finish in
the Top 21 for 32 points. This marks the fourth time in the past five
years UTEP has claimed the crown.
"I am very happy with both teams today especially the men's
team," said C-USA Men's Coach of the Year Paul Ereng of UTEP. "They
have worked really hard and I am proud of them. It was a tougher field
this year and to come back from placing second to finishing over the
defending champions is an amazing thing."
For the second consecutive year, Tulsa senior John Beattie
clocked the fastest course time of the day with a 24:23.4, marking the
fourth-time in championship history an individual medalist repeated as
conference champion. The Golden Hurricane claimed three of the top five
honors with Lewis Timmins finishing third in 24:30.0, while Kyle Dekker
was fifth with an 8K time of 24:46.5. The trio repeated their All-C-USA
first team honors.
Coming in second overall was UTEP's Nicodemus Ng'etich with a
time of 24:26.7, followed by freshman teammate Elkana Rotich in
fourth-place clocking 24:33.1 and Robert Menjo was seventh in 24:52.4.
Rotich was the highest finishing freshman and wins the 2009 C-USA Male
Freshman of the Year award.
Rice's Simon Bucknell was the lone non-Tulsa and UTEP runner to
earn All-C-USA first team honors with a time of 24:56.8 for
seventh-place.
Finishing in third-place was Rice men with 88 points, while
Marshall scored 116 points for a fourth-place finish. Host Houston took
fifth-place honors with 122 points, followed by East Carolina (140),
Memphis (210) and Tulane (236).
The SMU women's team took the C-USA Championship for the second year in
a row, claiming the first back-to-back title since 2004 when Marquette
notched its fifth consecutive win.
"The girls all ran amazing," said two-time C-USA Women's Coach of
the Year Cathy Casey of SMU. "They ran with heart especially on this
muddy course. They never let it bother them. Everybody switched up
places and did a great job. They all wanted the championship again and
you could tell. We had eight girls out there who all ran with their
hearts and I'm very proud of them."
UTEP's Risper Kimaiyo finished first with a 5K time of 17:46.3
to claim the title of individual champion as well as the C -USA
Freshman of the Year. Finishing in second place was junior Silje
Fjortoft who led the Mustangs with a time of 18:01.6. SMU freshmen Sara
Sjokvist and Veronika Blom crossed the finish line at 18:11.8 and
18:16.3, placing third and fourth, respectively.
Rounding out the top five was UTEP junior Gladys Chumba with a
time of 18:22.1. Finishing first for her team in 18:22.1 was Tulsa
junior Melanie Cleland who placed sixth (1823.5), followed by Miner
Kathya Garcia who finished seventh (18:26.7), completing the All-C-USA
first team honorees.
UTEP took second-place honors as a team, improving upon its
seventh place showing from a year ago. Rice and Tulsa finished third
(82) and fourth (90), respectively, while host Houston placed fifth
(138) and UAB finished in sixth (154). East Carolina, Southern Miss,
UCF, Tulane, Memphis, and Marshall completed the women's field.
Numerous C-USA teams will be competing in the upcoming NCAA Regionals on Nov. 14, followed by the NCAA Championship on Nov. 23.
