It has been two weeks since Jenny Simpson became the first American woman since 1983 to win the 1,500 meters at the world track and field championships, but the real celebration is set for next week.
The New York Road Runners will announce today that the former Colorado Buff will run the glamorous Fifth Avenue Mile on Sept. 24 against a talented international field.
"It's so exciting to finish my season on U.S. soil, to be able to bring home something the U.S. hasn't had in 28 years, and celebrate it with a lot of people who have been a huge part of my success," said Simpson, 25, who lives in Monument. "One of the most humbling experiences has been when I stood on the top of that podium, I felt like this podium should be big enough for 100 people. It shouldn't be just me standing up here, excited and receiving the credit."
