JACKSON STATE, SOUTHERN MENS TEAMS DISQUALIFIED FROM SWAC INDOOR TRACK CHAMPIONSHIPS

Baton Rouge, LA – The Jackson State and Southern men’s indoor track and field teams have been disqualified from the 2009 SWAC Indoor Track & Field Championships at Carl Maddox Fieldhouse due to unsportsmanlike conduct and behavior demonstrated by both teams on Sunday afternoon.

The teams were involved in an altercation in the stands during the event. All finishers and scores by both teams will be deleted, and all other finishers from other competing teams will move up in each category, thus resulting in the retabulation of team points toward the Championship.

“I am extremely disappointed by today’s incident,” SWAC Commissioner Duer Sharp said. “Championship events are to celebrate and reward the achievements of our student athletes. Today, the actions of those involved in the altercation have not exemplified that competitive spirit of the Southwestern Athletic Conference and its member institutions. This behavior is unacceptable and we will investigate completely before taking further disciplinary action.”
