European champion Christophe Lemaitre continued his dream season clocking yet another national record of 9.97 during the men’s 100m final at the IAAF World Challenge meeting in Rieti on Sunday evening.

However his sensational run was still not good enough for a podium finish as Jamaican Nesta Carter stormed to a world season lead equalling 9.78, also a personal best, in a top quality final. The Jamaican is now the fourth fastest man of all time.

It was a fabulous 100m with five men under 10 seconds and the sixth and seventh clocking 10.00. Ryan Bailey smashed his PB with a 9.88 time beating Jamaican Mario Forsythe, third in 9.95.

Jaysuma Saidy Ndure set a Norwegian record of 10.00 to finish in seventh place.

Earlier during the heats, Lemaitre gave an indication of things to come in the final when he equalled his French record and European season best of 9.98, his second-ever sub-10 second time, to finish behind Bailey who smashed his PB for the first time, clocking 9.95.

Kenyan David Rudisha set a second world record in a span of one week, clocking 1:41.01 for the 800m. He had clocked 1:41.09 last week in Berlin to better Wilson Kipkepter’s 13-year-old world record of 1:41.11.

The meeting in Rieti has now witnessed eight world records in its 40-year-old history, the last one registered by Asafa Powell who clocked 9.74 for the 100m in 2007.
