Oregon track and field rundown: One question for the critics: if not Eugene, where? | OregonLive.com

The NCAA decided in December to make Eugene the semi-permanent home of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

The meet, already held at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus in 2013 and scheduled for 2014, was further extended in Eugene until 2021.

It's a good deal for fans in and near the Willamette Valley, and further ratification of the reality that Eugene is one of the few places in North America -- maybe, the only place -- where track & field still is treated like a big deal.

But there has been a backlash, with critics suggesting the marriage between U.S. track & field and Hayward Field might be altogether too much of a good thing.
