At some point Friday evening at the inaugural Nike Track Nationals, Vista Murrieta (Murrieta, Calif.) coach Coley Candaele lost track of his team’s standing in the competition.  The man helming the top-ranked boys team in the meet at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon was diligently prepared, but eventually the swirl of concurrent events and decathlon-style scoring became too much.

“In the beginning I was so comfortable,” he recalled, “because I was following along, I was starting to predict everybody.   And then all of sudden, about 7 o’clock, there were about six events going on at one time, I lost complete control, and I said, ‘Forget it.  It is what it is, and we’ll find out in about an hour.’”
