Sunday’s TCS New York City Marathon wrapped up an exciting week for the city’s athletic community, following up Thursday’s momentous USATF Hall of Fame Gala at The Armory.

While 2015 USATF Hall of Fame inductees Allen Johnson, Hollis Conway, Ralph Mann, Al Blozis, Jack Torrance, and Harry Gill – along with USATF honorees Michael Johnson, Joan Benoit Samuelson and Peter Diamond – were the talk of the town earlier in the week, Kenya’s Mary Keitany and Stanley Biwott stole Sunday’s headlines.

At around 11:45 a.m., Keitany, 33, defended her 2014 TCS New York City Marathon title by running away from the women’s field in 2:24.25. 2009 World Marathon bronze medalist Aselefech Mergia of Ethiopia took second in 2:25.32, 2015 London Marathon winner Tigist Tufa of Ethiopia was third in 2:25.50, three-time European cross country champion Sara Moreira of Portugal was fourth in 2:25.53 and 2014 European marathon champion Christelle Daunay of France finished fifth in 2:26.57.

In her first TCS New York City Marathon appearance, Laura Thweatt topped the American field, finishing seventh overall in 2:28.23.

After finishing second in last year’s London Marathon, Stanley Biwott, 29, took his fist major marathon title in 2:10.34 over Geoffery Kamworor, who finished 14 seconds behind his fellow Kenyan to claim second.

2014 runner-up and Boston champion Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia was 3rd in 2:12.10, defending champion Wilson Kipsang of Kenya was 4th in 2:12.45, and 2015 World Marathon silver medalist Yemane Tsegay of Ethiopia rounded out the top five in 2:13:24.

Meb Keflezighi, 40, was the first American to cross the blue finish line, finishing 7th in 2:13.32 while breaking the country’s masters marathon record by 20 seconds.

But there was plenty of action before the day’s main events.

The first of Sunday’s eight TCS New York City Marathon race sections were the women’s and men’s wheelchair divisions, won by America’s Tatyana McFadden and South Africa’s Ernst Van Dyk.

McFadden demolished the previous course record by seven minutes and 20 seconds, crossing the finish line with a huge smile in 1:43.04. Van Dyk, the 2014 Boston Marathon winner, was all smiles as well while finishing in 1:30.54

Now just 370 days until the next TCS New York City Marathon!
