Carlson set to defend, De Reuck looks for second USA 25 km title

5/12/2011

INDIANAPOLIS – Andrew Carlson (Minneapolis, Minn.) returns to Grand Rapids looking to defend his 25 km title while 2004 Olympian Colleen De Reuck (Boulder, Colo.) looks to win her second women’s title since 2005 at the 2011 USA 25 km Championships. The championships will be hosted for the 18th year by the Fifth Third River Bank Run this Saturday.

Among Carlson’s main challengers for the title will be Nick Arciniaga (Flagstaff, Ariz.), who finished third behind Carlson last year. This year Arciniaga is a slightly different runner as he returns to Grand Rapids after a successful marathon campaign earlier in the year, running 2:11:30 at the Chevron Houston Marathon in January.

Also in the men’s field will be 2010 USA Men’s 10 Mile Champion Fasil Bizuneh (Flagstaff, Ariz.) and Carlson’s Team USA Minnesota teammates from Minneapolis, Josh Moen and Matt Gabrielson.

The women’s race will also see a Team USA Minnesota athlete chasing the title as Emily Brown (Minneapolis, Minn.) makes her debut at the distance and challenges De Reuck for the championship.

Also in the mix will be last year’s third-place finisher Dot McMahan and her Hansons-Brooks teammate Molly Pritz (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and Kathy Newberry (Ann Arbor, Mich.), the third place finisher at the 2010 USA Women’s Marathon Championship.
