Huddle and True to race USA 5 km Championships

INDIANAPOLIS -  2012 Olympian Molly Huddle (Providence R.I.) and reigning USA 5 km ChampionBen True (Hanover, N.H.) headline strong fields at the 2012 USA 5 km Championships hosted by the CVS Caremark Downtown 5 km this Saturday in Providence, R.I.  

True captured two national titles in 2011 with his 5 km and 10 km  wins. True finished sixth in the 5,000m at the Olympic Trials and went on to set a personal best of 13:20.53  in that event in July in Belgium.

True will have to face many challengers in defending his title includingRobert Cheseret, who won the 5 km championships in 2010 and Ben Bruce (Flagstaff, Ariz.), who finished as the runner-up the same year.Andrew Bumbalough (Portland, Ore.) boasts the fastest 5,000m time in the field in 13:16.26 and finished fourth at the Olympic Trials. Others to watch include American mile record holder Alan Webb(Charlottesville, Va.) and Augustus Maiyo (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who finished third at the recent USA 20 km championships.

As a resident of Providence, Huddle is sure to be the crowd favorite to take the win. Huddle is a two-time national champion with the 2011 national 5,000m title on the track, and the 2010 national 5 km title on the roads. Huddle is the American record holder for 5,000m with her personal best of 14:44.76, and she recently finished 11th at the Olympic Games.

Huddle’s top challenger’s include: Gabriele Anderson (Minneapolis, Minn.), who finished fourth in the 1500m at the 2012 Olympic Trials, Katie McGregor (Savage, Minn.), who is a seven-time USA champion, and eight-time NCAA Division II champion Neely Spence (Lake Orion, Mich.).

About the USARC
The USA 5 km Championships are the eighth stop on the 2012 USA Running Circuit (USARC), and will feature $30,000 in prize money.  The USARC is a USA Track & Field road series, featuring USA Championships from one mile to the marathon and attracts the best U.S. distance runners. The 2012 circuit features nine events for men and ten for women.

The 2012 USARC features more than $900,000 in circuit prize money with U.S. athletes competing for the right to represent Team USA in various international competitions.

The first ten U.S. runners earn points at each USARC race (15 for first, 12 for second, 10 for third, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1), with a final $12,500 grand prix purse ($6,000, $4,000, and $2,500) for the top three men and women point scorers overall.

The mission of the USA Running Circuit is to showcase, support, and promote U.S. runners.  Since its inception in 1995, the USARC and its races have provided over $6 million dollars to U.S. distance runners.
