Huddle and True win USA 5 km Championships

INDIANAPOLIS -  Molly Huddle (Providence R.I.) and Ben True (Hanover, N.H.) both picked up their second career wins at the USA 5 km Championships hosted by the CVS Caremark Downtown 5 km  as Huddle crossed the line in 15:29.9 and True finished in 13:52.1this Sunday in Providence, R.I.

The men’s race featured a large pack challenging for the win with as many as 15 men running within seconds of each other through two miles. As they neared the finish, True and Andrew Bumbalough(Portland, Ore.) raced each other stride-for-stride as True squeeked out the win by one-tenth of a second in 13:52.0. Bumbalough finished as the runner up in 13:52.1, and Robert Cheseret (Colorado Springs, Colo.) took third in 13:53.5. True in became the first back-to-back U.S. champion at the 5 km distance since Odis Sanders did so in 1980 and 1981.

The women’s race was dominated by hometown favorite Huddle as she ran at the front of the race from the beginning and distanced herself by nearly four seconds over her closest competitor to win in 15:29.9.  Thrroughout the race Huddle ran in the lead pack with Neely Spence (Lake Orion, Mich.) andElizabeth Maloy (Washington, D.C.) who finished second (15:33.7) and third (15:36.7.) respectively. This is the second U.S. road title for Huddle after winning the USA 5 km Championships in 2010.

About the USARC
The USA 5 km Championships are the eighth stop on the 2012 USA Running Circuit (USARC), and featured $30,000 in prize money.  The USARC is a USA Track & Field road series, featuring USA Championships from one mile to the marathon and attracts the best U.S. distance runners. The 2012 circuit features nine events for men and ten for women.

The 2012 USARC features more than $900,000 in circuit prize money with U.S. athletes competing for the right to represent Team USA in various international competitions.

The first ten U.S. runners earn points at each USARC race (15 for first, 12 for second, 10 for third, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1), with a final $12,500 grand prix purse ($6,000, $4,000, and $2,500) for the top three men and women point scorers overall.

The mission of the USA Running Circuit is to showcase, support, and promote U.S. runners.  Since its inception in 1995, the USARC and its races have provided over $6 million dollars to U.S. distance runners.
