Road racing veterans challenge for USA Women’s 10 km Championship title

10/5/2012

INDIANAPOLIS - The USA Women’s 10 km Championships will feature some of the top veterans of U.S. road racing including Magdalena Lewy-Boulet (Oakland, Calif.), Katie McGregor (Savage, Minn.) and Jen Rhines (Mammoth Lakes, Calif.) at the the Tufts Health Plan 10K for Women on Monday Oct. 8.

2008 Olympian Lewy-Boulet recently won the Kaanapali Maui Half Marathon after finishing 10th in January at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Marathon. For three-time Olympian Rhines, the 10 km Championships will be her first race in four months.

McGregor will certainly have the advantage of course-knowledge on her side as this will be her sixth year competing on this course. McGregor is a two-time national champion at this distance with back-to-back national titles in 2005 and 2006. McGregor finished second at this race last year and is the top returning runner.

Relative-newcomers challenging the veterans will include Neely Spence (Lake Orion, Mich.), who recently finished as the runner-up at the USA 5 km Championships, and Stephanie Rothstein (Flagstaff, Ariz.), who finished third at the USA 20 km Championships. Also in the mix for the title will be Lindsey Scherf (Fayetteville, N.C.) who finished second at the USA 25 km Championships this year and will be competing in the USA 10 Mile Championships on Sunday.

Live Coverage
Live text updates of the USA Women’s 10 km Championships will be available at www.USARunningCircuit.com beginning at noon ET. Video of the race and post-race interviews will be available shortly after the race in cooperation with RunnerSpace.com.

The 2012 USARC features more than $900,000 in circuit prize money with U.S. athletes competing for the right to represent Team USA in various international competitions.

The first ten U.S. runners earn points at each USARC race (15 for first, 12 for second, 10 for third, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1), with a final $12,500 grand prix purse ($6,000, $4,000, and $2,500) for the top three men and women point scorers overall.

The mission of the USA Running Circuit is to showcase, support, and promote U.S. runners.  Since its inception in 1995, the USARC and its races have provided over $6 million dollars to U.S. distance runners.
