Morgan Uceny, Fastest in World for 2011, Joins Fifth Avenue Mile Field - NYRR

Morgan Uceny, Fastest in World for 2011, Joins Fifth Avenue Mile Field

A great women's field for Sunday's Fifth Avenue Mile just got even better: Morgan Uceny, whose winning 1500-meter time in Brussels last Friday is the fastest in the world this year, is coming to New York.

The addition of Uceny, the reigning U.S. champion at 1500 meters, means the Fifth Avenue Mile will feature a rematch of the current 2011 world #1 versus the 2011 World Champion, Jenny Simpson.

While Simpson broke the IAAF World Championships tape in triumph earlier this month, Uceny—a pre-race favorite—hung on to finish after being tripped up with 450 meters to go and falling to the track, her hopes for victory crushed.

Asked after Brussels how she managed to put the World Championships disappointment behind her so quickly, she replied in an e-mail: "I got over the fall in Daegu because I knew that there was nothing I could have done to avoid it. I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Of course I think I would have come home with a medal, but instead of getting caught up in the "would haves" and "what ifs," I focused on the task ahead, which was winning the Diamond League title."

The 26-year-old Uceny succeeded, winning the Belgacom Memorial van Damme in Brussels on Friday in a personal best 4:00.06 to earn $40,000 and a diamond trophy as Samsung Diamond League 1500-meter champion this season.

Uceny ran here for the first time last year, finishing sixth. "I remember thinking it wasn't going to feel hard since it was a net downhill. But I was dead wrong! It was a tough race for me, but now I know what to expect," she said. "The New York Road Runners do a terrific job with the event, making it a special way to end the season."
