Mary Cain Plans to Run in Next Week's Fifth Avenue Mile

Mary Cain has been keeping a low profile since winning the 3,000 meters at the IAAF World Junior Track & Field Championships in July, but that is about to change.

Cain, who runs professionally for the Nike Oregon Project, expects to compete in the Fifth Avenue Mile next week in New York.

"She's had some great workouts," Oregon Project coach Alberto Salazar said. "She's healthy. She's ready."

Cain had planned to run in Diamond League races last month in Stockholm and Zurich. But Salazar said he and Cain decided she wasn't in peak condition for Stockholm. Salazar said Cain was in shape to run in Zurich last week, but they chose not to travel to Europe for just one race.
