Ducks Go High-Definition for Free Pepsi Web Cast The track and field meet will be the first of its kind online.
EUGENE, Ore. -- Fans of Oregon track and field have come to expect record-breaking performances at Historic Hayward Field, but this Saturday, online users can take part in another trendsetting event, the first-of-its-kind high-definition webcast of a collegiate track and field meet. The Pepsi Team Invitational, featuring Oregon, Texas A&M, UCLA and Washington, will be streamed live for free in HD on www.goducks.com beginning at 12:25 p.m. Track meets have long been shown on the web, but what makes the Pepsi meet unique is the introduction of a high-definition feed. The University of Oregon athletic department, working with their strategic technology partner NeuLion, will incorporate HD Adaptive Streaming Technology into the broadcast. NeuLion’s technology automatically detects bandwidth and will provide the highest quality HD video without buffering or interrupted programming. “At Oregon we are known for being innovative and want to continue to utilize technology available to us,” said UO senior associate athletic director for marketing and public relations Craig Pintens. “People have come to expect a high-definition television broadcast of sporting events and an HD webcast at historic Hayward Field will allow our fans all over the world to tune in. “It’s very exciting to be setting the pace, so to speak, with this technology.” Fans will also see a webcast that looks more like a television production with multiple cameras, graphics, real-time scoring, and pre-recorded interviews. Former Duck track coach Tom Heinonen will handle the announcing duties. He will be joined by a number of guest hosts throughout the meet, including world high jump champion Jesse Williams, Oregon Track Club Elite javelin thrower Cyrus Hostetler and coach Harry Marra. The online HD broadcast of the Pepsi Invitational can also be enjoyed through official Oregon athletics mobile apps. After signing up for a free O-Zone account, fans can watch live video using an iPad with the “Oregon Ducks for iPad” application ($6.99). Fans will also be able to watch most running events on-demand through their iPhone (“Oregon Ducks Premium” $2.99) or Android phone (“Oregon Ducks: Premium” $2.99). Oregon webcast last year’s Pepsi Team Invitational in a modified version of HD, taking a feed from the Oregon Sport Network’s television webcast. This year’s production will be entirely initiated for online viewers. Saturday’s Pepsi Team Invitational is a top five women’s showdown between No. 1 Oregon and No. 5 Texas A&M. Not to be outdone, the men’s competition will also feature a pair of ranked teams in the No. 6 Aggies and the No. 16 Ducks. The UCLA Bruins and Washington Huskies add Pac-12 flavor to the mix for what will surely be a can’t miss event. Even if fans are unable to Hayward Field, watch online as the Ducks make history both on and off the track. More news
