Track team to compete in sport's 'birthplace' - The Daily Collegian Online, Penn State University

Despite the seven-hour plane ride, no one on the Penn State women's track team is complaining about the team's destination to "Track Town, USA" -- a place in Eugene, Ore., where track and field is as revered as football.

"Eugene is really the birthplace of track and field, so to be competing there is so exciting for everyone," sprinter Shana Cox said about tomorrow's Oregon Pepsi Team Challenge.

The school's biggest claims to fame in track and field include former Oregon distance runner Steve Prefontaine and Nike co-founder Philip Knight, who also ran track for the school.

Prefontaine is known throughout the track and field world as one of the greatest and most inspirational runners of the modern era and helped inspire a running craze in the 1970s that continues through today.
