Johnston throws her best
BARRIE-Heading into the javelin competition at the OFSAA Track and Field event held in Sudbury in early June, Madison Johnston had already sized up the competition.
“I knew there was only one girl who could beat me,” said the Grade 12 student. “Having Brooke Rowland [from Westside Secondary in Orangeville] there made a difference.”
After Johnston’s first throw, however, the performance of the competition no longer mattered. She threw 44 metres, a personal best. The throw secured her lead and a gold medal.
“I told her she might as well just throw once and then go home,” joked Eastview coach Val Hargreaves, referring to Johnston’s similar strong start in discus. Johnston opened with a 43-metre throw, two metres further than her personal best, and her best throw of the day. The throw would earn her a bronze medal.
