OSHAWA -- Matt Stephenson has been cut some slack for wearing sandals to school this week.
Stephenson, a Grade 10 student at Oshawa's McLaughlin Collegiate, had little choice in the matter after having his big toe sliced by a shoe spike during a 1500-metre heat at the OFSAA provincial high school track-and-field championships in Sudbury.
Despite the fact that he could barely put a shoe over the painful injury, Stephenson still managed to deliver another gold medal for the school, winning his second straight OFSAA title in the 3000m run, this time in the junior division.
