Kenzo Cotton goes out with 200-400 double

State Meet Highlights

Nebraska's four-class championships take place at Omaha's Burke Stadium. But in addition to competitions arranged by school size, there is something called the "all-class gold." It's a reward for the best performance overall in every event. For Kenzo Cotton, a U.S. team member at the World Youth Championships last year, the prize might more aptly be called the "all-time gold."

Top Performances:

- Kenzo Cotton's health this season was jeopardized by the hamstring injury he suffered last summer in Ukraine and he had to manage himself through a tough senior season. Instead of blasting through the 100, he picked up the 400 instead. At state, he became the first male athlete in 107 years to win the same event four years in a row (the 200) and he also ran the fourth-fastest time in the 400 (47.66) in state history. The Papillion-La Vista senior will run at Arkansas next year.

- Chloe Akin-Otiko, a sophomore at Bellevue West, is on the verge of becoming the greatest female sprinter in state history. She lowered her own state meet record to 24.29 and also won the 100 in 11.91. She added a third title in the long jump, going 18-8.50.

- The Lincoln East girls 4x800 relay team ran US#18 9:18.36, which was also good enough to break the all-time state record.

- Jordan Flemington of Millard West swept the Class A hurdles in 14.33 and 38.17 and also anchored his team's 4x400 relay to a victory.

- Molly Sughroue of McCook won the Class B 800 in 2:12.53 and also won the 400 in 57.18 (57.06 prelim).

- Tyler Loontjer of Fillmore Central broke a Class C meet record in the pole vault with a clearance at 16-2.50.

- Jack Polerecky of Creighton Prep won the 3200 meters in 9:16.94, holding off talented freshman Seth Hirsch, who was second in 9:22.47.

- Reno Law from Millard South won the Class A 1600 in 4:15.00.

- Jeralyn Poe from North Star was the top girls distance runner, winning the Class A 1600 in 5:00.06 and the 3200 in 10:49.47.

- Samantha Lierman of Class C Wisner-Pilger won an all-class gold in the shot put with 46-2.25.

- Lanie Snyder of Millard West went 39-8.50 (nwi) in the triple jump and was second in the long jump with 18-1.50.

- Tiani Reeves of Gothenburg won Class B titles in the jumps, going 38-11 in the triple jump and 18-6 in the long jump.

Top Teams:

The Kearney boys won the state title for the 16th time in the last 20 years with 83 points. Papillion-La Vista was second with 77. Lincoln Southwest won the girls championship with 75 points, well ahead of runner-up Omaha North (56).

Cozad's boys (69) and Northwest's girls (52) won the Class B titles.

Top Competition: The Class A 4x400 finals, boys and girls, were both tightly contested. In the boys race, Millard West (with Flemington on the anchor) edged Bellevue West as both teams dipped under 3:20. Millard West finished in 3:18.92, Bellevue West in 3:19.35. The girls final was even closer, with Millard North beating Omaha Central 3:54.54 to 3:54.62.

Record-breaker: Lincoln East and Pius X both surpassed the state record in the 4x800 when they went under 9:20. Lincoln East's time of 9:18.36 is No. 1 all-time in Nebraska and Pius X's 9:19.17 is No. 2.
