NCAA Championships: McCarty wins second straight title
Published by
As expected, D'Ana McCarty repeated as NCAA champion in the women's weight throw. McCarty led the competition from start to finish and launched a new personal best of 22.76m (74-08.25) in the second round. In a post-competition interview with Flotrack, McCarty said the quiet environment (the weight throw is held off-site) helped out a little today: "Today it felt like just a regular meet since we were away from the crowd ... I was relaxed and calm for the most part and did what I've been practicing." The unexpected results came after McCarty. Victoria Flowers (Connecticut) and Irene Cooper (Western Michigan) both threw big personal bests to place second and third respectively. Flowers improved her season best by over a meter and finally surpassed her personal best from last year. Cooper, who we said was entering this meet on a roll, also added nearly two feet to her best. Jere' Summers (Louisville), who was ranked second entering the meet, fouled out. Jeneva McCall (Southern Illinois) placed lower than expected in third, but still had a decent mark. She would have needed a personal best to beat Flowers for second. Nikola Lomnicka (Georgia) also had a clutch fith round throw that moved her from eight to fifth and was the only thrower to improve their position in the finals.
