Cobras aim to shed ‘can’t win big one’ label

Led by Shayla Sanders, Boyd Anderson will make another run at an elusive state title.

No matter how many All-American sprinters and middle distance runners the Boyd Anderson husband-and-wife track coaching tandem of Damion and Duchane Thomas produce, the conversation always turns to Boyd Anderson coming up short at the State Finals.

Despite leading the Cobras’ girls team to five consecutive top-three state finals finishes, highlighted by a No. 3 rank in the ESPN RISE poll last season, credit for the seventh-year coaches has been as elusive as a state title.

Shayla Sanders, the latest All-American who holds nation-leading times in the 100 (11.33) and 200 (23.25), said the Cobras will bring a rallying cry of “Win it for coach Damion and coach Duchane” when they file into Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville on Saturday for the FHSAA Class 4A State Finals.
