It's not that competing in the Class 3A state track and field championships underwhelms Leon junior Matt Mizereck. He's just been there before. Year after year.
Mizereck, along with Leon sophomores Will Stanford and Riley Doherty, qualified for and will compete in the 3,200-meter run.
"To qualify three kids in one event is pretty good," Leon coach Andrew Wills said.
But before Mizereck lines up for the 3,200, he will race the 1,600-meter run, in which he said he will need to run his best mile. And more importantly, beat one of his biggest rivals in Estero High junior Erick Montoya.
"I'm gonna try to go for the win," Mizereck said. "But my main goal is to beat Erick."
Last year, Mizereck placed third in the 3,200, one spot behind Montoya. In fourth place right behind Mizereck was his teammate, then-freshman Stanford. Like Mizereck, Stanford feels at ease in Winter Park having competed at state before.
