Mansfield girls dismantle 4x400 state record

State Meet Highlights

The Massachusetts state championships (MIAA All State) comes together to cap the regular season at Bridgewater University, located between Boston and Cape Cod. The season's stars were Garrett O'Toole (who attended an independent school and didn't compete at state), Karina Shepard and the girls from Mansfield, who broke the state record in the 4x400 relay.

Top Performances:

- Senior Karina Shepard of Dracut broke Ari Lambie's 12-year-old meet record in the 800 by nearly two seconds with US#15 2:07.14.

- Sierra Irvin, a junior from Hingham, broke the meet record in the 400 meters by clocking 54.51.

- Senior Abbie McNulty of Bishop Feehan won the 2-mile by more than 20 seconds in 10:48.98.

- The Mansfield girls, pressed much of the way by Hingham, smashed the state record in the 4x400 with 3:50.14. The record-setting quartet was Maddie Oldow, Rachel Stier, Lindsey Goulet and Michaela Amerante.

- Kerstin Darsney, a senior from Triton, went 38-8 to win the triple jump.

- Michaela Smith of Newton North, a senior, was a double winner in the throws. She won the shot put with 43-11 and the discus with 122-9.

- Paul Hogan of Burlington won the 2-mile in 9:01.47. The senior was less than two seconds off Alberto Salazar's 1975 meet record.

- Ben Colello of Lincoln-Sudbury, a senior, won the 400 hurdles in 54.68.

- Taj-Amir Torres of Amherst-Pelham won the boys 100 in 11.68 (2.1w), while Craig Green of Falmouth won the 200 in 21.68. Both are juniors.

- Peter Garmon, a junior from Billerica, won the 800 meters in 1:52.97.

- Nick Carleo, a junior from Newburyport, took the boys mile in 4:15.42.

- Mansfield's boys 4x800 relay broke the meet record with 7:49.87.

- Weston senior Andrew Connolly threw 193-3 to win the boys javelin.

Top Teams:

With a big push from Smith's double in the throws, Newton North scored 42 points to win the girls championship. On the boys side, it was Woburn taking top honors with 38 points.

Top Competition:

The 4x800 relays are always good in Massachusetts and the girls race was a very close. Lincoln-Sudbury ran 9:17.17 to edge Needham in 9:17.58 as both teams cracked the national Top 100.

Record-breaker: The biggest record to fall this year in Massachusetts was Garrett O'Toole's all-New England mile of 4:01.89, but he doesn't compete in the state meet. This biggest moment of the state meet came when Mansfield's girls shaved nearly three seconds off the all-time state record in the 4x400 relay. Three-fourths of that team – Stier, Goulet and Amerante – return next year.
