With the three (or four or five) best female steeplechasers in U.S. history assembled for the final of the splash-and-dash, getting ready to pick the Olympic team for the first-ever time in that event, the odds were pretty good that the American Record of 9:28.75 set just last summer by Lisa Galaviz was going down. The question was, who? Jenny Barringer was the NCAA champion and defending U.S. champion, Anna Willard was the previous year's NCAA champion, Galaviz had the fastest mark, and then came the fact that the women's steeple has a habit of re-inventing itself on a nearly annual basis to produce a new trio of faces to knock off the old.
