Athletics Canada’s 2015 Canadian 10km Championships take place tomorrow, Saturday May 23, as part of the Ottawa 10k during Tamarack Ottawa Race Weekend. The Ottawa 10k is the only IAAF Gold Label recognized 10-kilometres road race event in Canada, and one of only four in the world. The event consistently attracts the world’s best fields, along with Canada’s top athletes.

Those who make the trip to Ottawa are in for a great weekend of racing; fans from around the world that can’t make it to the nation’s capital can watch all the action live on AthleticsCanada.tv. Start time for the race is 6:30 p.m. ET Saturday May 23.

Women’s Canadian Championship preview

Newly minted Canadian 10,000-metres record holder Natasha Wodak of Vancouver, B.C., headlines a fast and talented group of Canadian women in Ottawa. Wodak eclipsed Courtney Babcock’s twelve year-old record earlier this month and hopes to translate that track fitness into her first Canadian road title.

Only five seconds back of Wodak in the Canadian record setting race was Canadian marathon record holder Lanni Marchant of London, Ont. With convincing wins in the Modo Spring Run-off 8k and Toronto Yonge Street 10k, Marchant has been a force on the roads this spring.

Only a year removed from fracturing her femur at the 2014 Canadian Half-Marathon Championships in Montreal, Que., Krista Duchene of Brantford, Ont., has returned to the roads in fine form. Last month Duchene ran 2:29:37 at the Rotterdam Marathon to place third and achieve both the 2015 World Championship and 2016 Olympic Games standard in the marathon.

Other Canadian women to look out for include recent IAAF world cross country teammates Natasha LaBeaud of Kelowna, B.C., and Lindsay Carson of Whitehorse, Yk. Recently crowned Canadian 10,000m champion on the track Laura Batterink of Port Perry, Ont., Tarah Korir of St. Clements, Ont., Rhiannon Johns of Sault Ste-Marie, Ont., and Leslie Sexton of London, Ont.

Men’s Canadian Championship preview

Eric Gillis of Guelph, Ont., and Kelly Wiebe of Swift Current, Sask., top the field for the men’s entries at the Canadian 10km Championships. Gillis, the defending champion, had a busy and successful spring on the roads. The two-time Olympian earned wins at the Toronto Yonge Street 10k, Harry’s Spring Run Off 8k and Banque Scotia 21k de Montréal.

Wiebe has also run well this spring with a win at the Modo Spring Run-off 8k and a runaway victory to take the Canadian 10,000m track title two weeks ago. We’ll see on Saturday if he’s ready to provide Gillis a challenge for this Canadian road title.

Other Canadian men to keep on eye on include: Matt Loiselle of Toronto, Ont., Sami Jibril of Toronto, Ont., Pier-Olivier Laflamme of L’Ancienne-Lorette, Que., David Le Porho of Montreal, Que., and Jeff Costen of Toronto, Ont.

The Canadian 10k Championships also serve as part of the selection process for the 2015 Chiba Ekiden Relay national team. For more information visit http://athletics.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/2015Chiba.pdf.
