Georgia's Torrin Lawrence Clocks World's Fastest 400 In 2010

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. --- Georgia sophomore sprinter Torrin Lawrence
registered the world's fastest 400-meter dash time this year during the
opening day of the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark., on Friday.

Lawrence, a Jacksonville, Fla., native who was running out of the second
heat, clocked an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 45.03, which is the
third-fastest time in collegiate history and the seventh-fastest overall
time in the history of the world.  This was the fastest indoor 400 time
run since Kerron Clement (44.57) broke the world record in 2005.

His time also shattered the school record, which was set at the 2008 SEC
Indoor Championships.  Justin Gaymon set the former record of 45.94 as
he was claiming a conference title.

Lawrence has already had a banner indoor season in 2010.  At the Hokie
Invitational, he crossed the 300-meter dash finish line in 32.32 to top
the former collegiate record of 32.67 set by Mississippi State's Lorenzo
Daniel in Gainesville, Fla., on March 1, 1987.  Lawrence's 300 time was
also the fifth-fastest time in the world ever and the fastest time in
the world this year, threatening Wallace Spearmon's world-record time of
31.88 set in 2005.

Lawrence also won the 200 at the Virginia Tech Elite meet with an NCAA
automatic qualifying time of 20.80.  This is the second-fastest 200 in
the world this year and is just three hundredths of a second off of his
school record set in 2009.

The remainder of Georgia's results from the Tyson Invitational on Friday
will be released at the completion of the last event.
