Rio Mesa freshman impresses at Arcadia InvitationalPublished by
From staff reports Being the youngest finalist in the biggest stage of her high school career did little to affect Rio Mesa High freshman Valexia Droughn. Under the lights of the Arcadia Invitational, one of the largest high school track and field meets in the country, Droughn turned a season-best time into a third-place finish in the girls' 100-meter dash Saturday at Arcadia High. Helped by a slight tailwind, Droughn crossed the finish line in 11.95 seconds. Ashton Purvis of St. Elizabeth won in 11.54, just ahead of Yasmin Woodruf of St. Mary's Academy. The Rio Mesa boys' 4x100 relay finished second to Long Beach Poly in its heat and second overall with a time of 42.24. Only four other Ventura County relay teams have ever run faster. Long Beach Poly won with a 41.88. Corona/Santiago was third at 42.29. Oaks Christian's Chris Owusu, one of the fastest boys' sprinters in the state, won the invitational 200 in 21.42 and placed third in the 100 in 10.60.
