Rutgers Women’s Track And Field Competes at Larry Ellis Invitational

PRINCETON, N.J. – The Rutgers women’s outdoor track and field team recorded five individual event victories, including an NCAA Regional qualifier at the Larry Ellis Invitational on Saturday, April 19, at William Weaver Stadium on the campus of Princeton University. Senior Sylvia Galarza (Millville, N.J.) highlighted the Scarlet Knights’ performances as she won each of the three events she competed in.

Galarza qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the javelin with a winning throw of 144’4”. She also won the discus (153’4”) and shot put (45’4 1/4”) with BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying marks to pace Rutgers.

The Scarlet Knights also sealed a victory in the long jump and 100-meter hurdles. Freshman Jamie Walker (Lawnside, N.J.) took first in the long jump with a leap of 18’ 9 3/4” (BE), while junior Bryanna Johnson (Jackson, N.J.) won the hurdles in 14.14 (BE, ECAC).

Other postseason qualifying marks turned in by Rutgers included a fourth-place showing the javelin, a pair of fifth-place marks in the 400-meter and triple jump and a seventh-place finish in 1,500-meter.

Senior Stefanie Petine (Bloomfield, N.J.) recorded a throw of 127’ (BE) to take fourth in the javelin, while sophomore Pavielli Vega (Orlando, Fla.) ran 56.82 (BE) in the 400 and freshman Nwamaka Okobi (Freeport, N.Y.) recorded a leap of 38’2 3/4” (BE) in the triple jump to earn their respective fifth-place finishes.
