Cranny blitzes junior women's field at US XC

With the USATF Cross Country Championships just a 15-minute drive from her house, Elise Cranny was more than happy to enter the junior women's 6-kilometer race.

Even though the race didn't qualify her for a U.S. team this year, it was something fun to do. And it also reminded the running community that Cranny cannot be overlooked – even on a day when Mary Cain and Alexa Efraimson were racing the mile at the Millrose Games.

"It was really fun," Cranny said after a 50-second victory in 21 minutes, 14 seconds.

"Especially because I knew a lot of the people there who were cheering and had lots of energy."

The Stanford-bound Cranny may have been able to compete with some of the top senior for 8K judging by the finish times. Instead, she had a comfortable run and pushed herself just like she did throughout the Colorado high school cross country season.

"(My coach) thought (the senior race) might be a little long for me right now," Cranny said.
She tore off the starting line and went through the first 2K in 6:40 – 12 seconds faster than the senior women. She was also faster than them through 4K. (There is no telling how many pros she would have displaced from prize money).

It was Cranny's first race since NXN last December and it comes a month before the New Balance Nationals Indoor at The Armory in New York City, March 14-16.

Cranny is planning to go to nationals and is most likely going to enter the 800 meters.
The cross country race at Flatirons Golf Course felt a little bit like a Colorado state meet, she said.

"It was similar, especially with Katie Rainsberger there," Cranny said. "It felt very similar. Having a pretty big meet close to home was really convenient."

Later, Cranny made sure to watch a re-play of the Women's Wanamaker Mile at the Millrose Games. Cain, 17 and a pro, won the race. Efraimson, 16 and a high school junior, ran 4:32.15 for No. 2 all-time in the mile.

In the cross country race, Rainsberger, a sophomore from Air Academy of Colorado Springs, was fifth in 22:22.

In 8-kilometer junior men's race a pair of the Team USA junior runners from the Bupa Great Edinburgh trip – John Dressel (Mt. Spokane WA) and Estevan De La Rosa (Arcadia CA) – continued to stick with cross country for another month and finished fourth and fifth overall. Steven Fahy from La Costa Canyon CA was sixth.

Sean McGorty, the 2012 Foot Locker runner-up and a Stanford freshman, charged through the first 2K in 5:53 to break away from the field and won the title by 42 seconds in 24:44.
