Homepage

Located in Ajax, Ontario Pickering High School is known for academics, the arts, and infamously, at times, for its athletics programs.  To sum it up, it has a good mix and the right balance.  We wish we had facilities, but manage with what we have through dedication by the coaches and athletes alike.

The track and field team have been Durham Region Champoions for several years running and OFSAA champions for boys 91/92/97/98/02/10/11 and girls in 07/09/10/11.

The strength of our team resides in our coaching staff, which possesses the ability to recognize the needs and abilities of all athletes. The coaching staff offers opportunities suitable for all levels of ability. The Team has emerged as one of the top high school track team in the province; twenty-eight OFSAA Championship and sixty-nine Durham Region (LOSSA) Championship banners have been won since 1987. In a given year, the Trojans Track Team has placed among the top three finishers at (OFSAA) the Ontario High School Championships. Many have gone on to become scholarship athletes in the NCAA as well as being selected to provincial and national teams. Athletes have been given the opportunity to participate and have experienced great successes on the international stage while attending Pickering.

Our Vision: To encourage increased participation in the sport of Track & Field.

Our Mission: To provide a progressive High School Track & Field program.

Our Values: A sporting environment that is fun and competitive for all involved.

The Trojan Track & Field Team had a quick start to the 2011 track season, which began in the nation’s capital on April 1st. . Team members boarded buses on Thursday mornings for the four-hour ride east to Ottawa.  The team participated in a series of three planned indoor invitational meets that were held at North America’s indoor dome track & field facility, the Louis Riel Dome, where team members competed against student/athletes from eastern Ontario and their results showed great promise.

The Civic Stadium in Oshawa was under construction, while having a new track installed, so the 2011 edition of the Durham Region (LOSSA) Championships was held in Belleville.  The LOSAA result was golden with Pickering team leaving the stadium in Belleville as the top Track & Field Team in Durham and earning its 77th LOSSA Championship Banner since 1989.

The early season performances of the midget girls and boy’s teams were filled with many surprises and it continued through to the OFSAA Championships.  At the OFSAA Central Region Championship, held at York University, Pickering athletes put together a great team effort winning for the fifth consecutive year the Overall Boys and Overall Girls Team Titles among all schools from York, Georgian Bay and Durham Regions.  Forty-four athletes qualified to represent Pickering at OFSAA, the largest team at the provincial meet, North America’s largest Championships.  With returning veterans and the addition of the midget boys and girls teams, Trojan athletes had a focus on winning its 11th and 12th OFSAA Championship Titles which were held at Laurentian University in Sudbury.

The OFSAA Championship is like a final exam and Pickering students/athletes all passed with honors.  Members of the OFSAA team participating at the championship meet all came up with personal best performances on June exam day.  Lead by team captain Xavier King, who collected 24 points and the OFSAA set of medals, the Trojans departed from Sudbury as the number one track & field school in Ontario and one of the top high school track and field programs in Canada.

Because of the lack of a proper facility to train on at Pickering, outdoor team practices began at 6:30 PM and were held at a neighboring high school in north Pickering.  Practices were held six days a week during the months of April and May.  At the end of the long season Pickering athletes had travelled five thousand kilometers, spent fifty hours on buses, one hundred and seventy-two hours training and eighty hours at the competition venue.  Television interviews and film crews, newspaper articles and photographers, as well as radio sports celebrities and the mayor all gave the thumbs up to one of the most successful seasons by a high school track & field team.

Let’s do it again in 2012!
