Hi Doug, Where are the All-time state bests located?

Hi Doug - Can you please update Marylands All-Time outdoor list to include Darryl Haraway's 100m (10.20) and 200m (21.00) Both are State Records, the sad thing is that the state wont include us considering we are a private school. Both are FAT and wind legal. thanks Coach Leon (DeMathat Catholic)
DougB
Coach -- According to my records for Maryland, Dwight Thomas of Northwestern ran 10.14 in 2000 and 20.66 in 1999. And I believe both of those are wind legal. If I'm wrong about those, please let me know. I'll keep looking into it. Darryl is certainly close!

Hi Doug, I'm not sure if this is a correction but may point of clarification...The WA All-Time Best in the girls' 1600 would be 4:30.57, which is converted from a 4:32.15 indoor mile that Alexa ran at the Millrose Games. That's the time that would be recognized by John Sells who publishes the Track Annual and would be listed in the State Track Program as Best. At least that's what they have done with Lindgren's best indoor 2-mile time. DyeStat may not recognize indoor times as State Bests, in that case you are right on with Alexa's 4:33.29.
RottenTea
Correction: Lindgren's indoor time is not listed as WA Best 3200 in State Program. (is listed as State Best in Track Annual)
DougB
Thanks. It would be my goal this winter to have have a different set of "indoor" records for each state, although for states like Washington and many others that could be piecemeal and an evolving process that takes a while.

DougB
For the meantime I haven't published them just yet. I've got all of the events for all of the states but I think it's about 90-95 percent accurate at this point. At some future point I'll publish it though. If there's anything your curious about let me know!

Doug, nice job with this. However, the NJ state record in the 800 is John Marshall at 1:48.44.
DougB
Thanks!

The MA state record for the 800m is 1:49.0 Darren Dinneen (Phillips Academy, Andover, MA) '96. http://ma.milesplit....ge#.U68_l7HV6MY
DougB
Thanks for that correction, Bill. I didn't have that one. As for the Northport boys, TF&N is considering that adjustment. I'll go along with whatever they decide.

The New York State Boys record for an actual 3200 meter race is 8:52.75 by Dan Middleman (W.T. Clarke school in Westbury in 1987) according to Larry Byrne's Bluebook 2014 ..... Not sure how the Northport Boys 4xMile got converted to 17:10.2??

I heard recently that Kai wasn't able to do any speed work until after the state meet because of his hip acting up. If this is true, that would mean that he ran pretty much his whole season in base training. Also, keep in mind that he was in a boot in July, and maybe part of August. So what he did, he did off of four months of training and four weeks of speed workouts.

He will be an incredible pick for whatever college gets him (Wisconsin or Stanford).

Also, unless Templeton (or someone other than Joe or Dressel) run away with the FL title, then I would crown Kai as the final US #1.

Kai Wilmot smiles because he loves the run... and he has a whole deck of cards up his sleeve.
Scott Bush
Wilmot obviously has some major talent (sub-9 as a soph) and shows he can grind out big-time wins with smart tactics. He reminds me a bit of Mike Fout. A guy who is terrific over the long distances, has tons of talent, is injury prone, and if he can stay healthy can be one of the very best. I really hope he stays healthy this winter and spring and busts out some tremendous times.
Bsarno1
All I know about Kai is what I read here...that said, I suspect that come spring, if he remains fit, Kai will be among the track elite. If at Arcadia, he may be the guy to beat. This based on a suspicion....I was not there, am not privy to the runners thoughts and plan, that the course favored track runners?......it was hard and the course is generally so bland that runners rarely had to alter their stride or carriage like they would at Arcadia or VCP. Indeed, I would rate a steeplechase on track as much more challenging. Runners could maintain the same form except for a couple of obstacles that were really hazards.
Look at the other top finishers...Efraimson, Cranny and Haney are all world class middle distance runners on track at the junior level. Indeed, Haney back on a solid flat course was again the standout runner he was last summer. Down the road, do not forget how he and Wilmot ran at NXN...love to see them go at it at Arcadia or Penn or NBON...
Of all things, both winners reminded me of how Abby D. Crushes college fields fall and spring.

I can tell you from up close experience that a number of teams of both genders stayed inside until right before introductions. I was one of the people who had to chase teams down to get them to the introductions.

When I think back on which teams did what I don't see a correlation between what they did pre race and where they finished. I think its more about what each runner needs to be able to prepare for the race. For some the cold is not a factor, for others it is. As long as you take care of doing what you need, you'll be fine (able to perform up to your capabilities). I can tell you this - as much as a day or more before the race we could see those who were freaked out by the cold and focused on it too much to the detriment of their performances.

What Wilmot did worked for him and that's all that matters. Anyone would have been impressed by that performance but I think even more, his nerve in going that far out in front of a field of that quality. You have to have a ton of confidence in yourself and your training to do that. Congrats to him. Both races had sme of the best performances I've ever witnessed on an XC course.

The North Central plan of staying inside paid off. I wonder how many other teams (if any) stayed inside that long?

I wondered about that aspect on Fri when teams were running the course (and/or posing) shirtless... I'm not sure which teams they were, though, so I don't know how it corresponds to their performances.

Just amazing. Thanks for a great Thanksgiving Day story. I am so grateful for my healthy daughters and wish Kayla the best race she can have at Footlocker this weekend.

I just watched the feature on the Today show. Nice summary story. Can't believe what you started Doug!!

Pretty cool to see the Kayla Montgomery story on the front page of the New York Times today.

I sort of think they took a leap with the premise that not feeling your legs is some sort of benefit or advantage ... but it's a small quibble. Great to see that her story has been amplified so that it can reach more people.

http://www.nytimes.c...ref=sports&_r=0

Because it was in the Times today, it was also picked up by the paper in Sydney, Australia. (among many, many others, no doubt).

Great story! Thanks Doug!

I don't know when the last time was when I cried, it's been many years, but this article made me ball like a baby. Such an inspirational person!

Coach Cromwell - Thanks for your post.

Kayla's a hero in my book regardless of the outcome today. I suspect that the example of her spirit, determination and character will inspire Mount Tabor runners for a very long time.

Saturday was interesting all across the country and some very very good runners did not qualify for the NXN or Foot Locker spots they were shooting for. Sometimes it just doesn't work out and that's sports. (Ask any Alabama football fan today).

There will be more races. And because it's Kayla, we'll always be pulling for her.

Well said coach. MS has hit my family hard. It is always the elephant in the room. Those that have it may struggle at times, but they never use it as an excuse and to be supportive I do not often help, although I want to, unless asked.
Looks like Kayla asked no quarter today and 11th in the region is a great accomplishment. Dick Francis, the British mystery writer, once wrote that there isn't always a happy ending in horse racing stories. This may be true in cross country sometimes but in Kayla's case the race is far from over and on the real championship course of life, she not only is a qualifier but already has won the gold medal. Way to go Kayla.
MTXC
As Kayla's coach I must say it was the best article ever written on her. Doug did a excellent job capturing the essence of what it is like to run with MS and how she has not used it as an excuse. Thank You Doug! Footlocker South results? Well, everyone wanted the fairy tale ending for her, but she finished in 11th place in 17:22. Every other year this would have made it to Footlocker Nationals but not so for Kayla in 2013. She improved 33 seconds from her 17:55 a year ago. How did she take it seeing it slip away? I guess I will keep that as private between coach and athlete, but it was a PR and she displayed class in her disappointment. She really went for it during the 2nd mile and led a pack of six out of the woods with 800m to go. Unfortunately, only five of those girls would make it to San Diego. She did beat MS one more time today! Yes, there was a catch, and a long hug 30 min later. She was thankful for the opportunity to compete. She is our school record holder and #5 All Time for NC. Kayla will continue to beat MS and give 100% like she did today. She improved 6:07 in 4 years. I think the lessons learned from all those miles is what she will take away from this in time. Thank you for sharing her story and bringing it to a National audience. She definitely felt the support today. Hopefully all of us can be a little more thankful and inspired because of it. Life is rarely a fairy tale. It sure was an amazing experience to pursue one though.

Such a nice story. Good luck Kayla.

I do not understand how Kayla does it but I am glad she does. MS has touched my family very deeply and I have seen how it slows people....run? How about just walking. Will be rooting for Kayla not only for her to run well but also to outdistance her MS. Go Kayla!

I posted ratings for the top 20 overall (and the top teams) on the meet's results thread

Girls - Boys

Also updated the course records thread

Teams - Boys Individuals - Girls Individuals

(new marks highlighted in red)

Lots of new runners up there for the boys race... and, as mentioned, a new course (team time) record from the Davis girls.

Would you have time to do the ratings on the top 20 or so from each race? Thanks
