Glen, welcome to the family! I was not an athlete in high school. I remember having a friend who was and not being able to really comprehend what she went through. Then my daughter was looking for a sport to do but did not want a dog-eat-dog team competitive experience. A little bit of recreational track during Jr High and she was sold on running. I could see it was a good fit. Dyestat became my haunting grounds and I did what you do, scouted courses and provided general pit team support. Volunteering as a driver was one of the best experiences of my life. I still speak to many of the ladies and gentlemen I was privileged to transport as they are now beginning to complete college and enter the working world. The individuals drawn to distance running are amazing. Two weeks until D1 Regionals and I can hardly wait!

Glad I'm not alone at this Rookie thing. Having been a band dad for many years I was shown last weekend in Lewiston, Idaho, the night before the State Finals on Saturday, I certainly have an aweful LOT yet to learn. I posted this Friday nite after visiting with other xc parents at the motel who were also arriving for the meet: "Being new at this cross country Dad thing I'm sitting here by the fire place at the motel chatting, about our kids and how they've been doing, with another xc parent when after a bit she asks me what Dwain is ranked at. I innocently ask her, whats that? She gets a little smile on her face and says , 'you should probably look this up: Idahoxc.com.'
I did... and got a SHOCK...
Wow! Dwain's ranking for Idaho 5A schools?...
#1 :-) His name is all over the place there.
Now I see what what that silly little smile she made really means when we were chatting. After checking out the site this dad is pretty excited at what he sees there. Now I'm going to need to work at just staying humble about all this. I probably shouldn't have gone there.........
But I'm glad I did ;-)"
Yep, I'm thinking I got some serious catching up to do. :-)

Glen - nice job, I enjoyed your post, and thought you captured XC well as a sport. My son completed four years of High School XC and track last year and is now running at the DII level. Enjoy, you have quite the ride ahead of you,

Great blog post! Get ready for three more years of XC fun. I love this quote "There is no way imaginable that I could do even the slightest imitation of what these young men and women do on a cross-country course.". You should do one of these at the end of each year.

Wonderful article Glen. I thoroughly enjoyed it! I too am a XC dad but my experience is a bit different as I was a runner myself at around the same era as you (I'm 49). That said, I just want to say thank you for sharing your perspective so that other parents like you may gain and a new found level of support for their kids and the sport. Hey, if you ever want or need some advice or have any questions that may help you gain additional or even better perspective to help your son, just send me a message. It sounds like you are WELL ahead of the curve than most parents but because of your article I just feel that you deserve any edge you can get in addition to the fantastic support you are clearly already giving your son. Good luck, keep up the good work, and the same goes for your son! All the best.

IS there any website I can follow the race on line or do I have to wait until the end?
