17,130 total views | Who I Am... About Coach Mirones A native Washingtonian, Mirones began running distance at Prince Georges Community College. Became a member of the Potomac Valley Track Club in 1975, Florida Track Club 1978, and Reebok Racing South Team 1984, Asics Racing Team South 1986, 10k Road Race Championships Boca Raton 1986, Gasparilla 15k Championship Team 1986. 2018 Leto Track & Field Hall of Fame. Mirones has led high schools to runner up status at state meets and state qualifiers for over 30 years. Mirones is camp director of the Blowing Rock Trails Camp. In 1975-76, under Coach West watch at PGCC, Mirones earned a spot in the NJCAA Cross Country finals in the 10k and was named Most Improved Runner 1976. Mirones qualified in the NJCAA Track & Field finals in the 5k and 10k. Mirones transferred to the University of South Florida in 1976. It was under Jerry Slaven, at that his times began to drop in the 5k and 10k in Cross Country and Track. Mirones quickly learned that mileage and patience and listening to his coach soon dropped his times 14:53 3 mile and 32:10 track 10K. Mirones is also credited with the meteoric rise of several high school distance runners out of Tampa, Florida. Scott Levell and Raymond Freidman from Gaither High School in 1992-95. Levell was a state champion in 1993 the 3200 running 9:12, and Raymond Friedman running 1600 in 4:12 and 800 in 1:54. Raymond was second in the 800 at state in 1993. Both runners became NCAA qualifiers in Cross Country and Track the first year as freshman at LaSalle. Mirones has spent over twenty five years as a head coach in high school cross country, and assistant coach in track & field at the high school level. As the distance coach at the high school level Mirones has had team success and individual runner’s success as well. Leading Tampa Catholic to a second in State competition in 1989 2-A Cross Country, Gaither High in 1993-94 second and state. Coaching at St. Leo College, Mirones led the Lions to a second place finish in the 1978-79 Sun Shine State NCAA competition. Mirones was named Coach of the Year by the Tampa Tribune in 1989. Mirones remains active consultant to various charity groups around Tampa as Road Race Director and setting up Cross Country courses for high school and collegiate meets. Mirones is also a certified USAT&F, and FHSAA Track & Cross Country Official and has been an official at major track & field meets such Florida Relays, FSU Relays, SEC Cross Country Championships, and State High School Track and Cross Country series in Florida.
