Expectations, and attendant pressures, are a funny thing in distance running. Columbus (Miami, Fla.) senior Armando Del Valle felt them last week in a home state invite and suffered his first loss
of the season to fellow Floridian Ryan Pickering. This weekend, he had
“low expectations” for how he would do personally, coming in to his Boys
Race of Champions at the 11th Great American XC Festival, and flew to a
wholly unexpected course record 15:01 for the 5k layout.
Where Del Valle’s – and his US#29/SE#4 teammates’ – expectations were higher was for the team battle and, well, that didn’t turn out as well for them.
