College: A six-time All-American in his Minnesota career, three each in cross country (2007, 2008, 2009) and track (2008 outdoor, 2009 indoor, 2009 outdoor). During his career at Minnesota, Hassan set school records in 8K cross country (23:29), indoor 5,000 meters (13:58.16), and outdoor 5,000 meters (13:28.45). In the 2012 outdoor season, Mead set a personal best in the 10,000 meters at the Payton Jordan Invite with a 28:12.74. At the U.S. Olympic Trials, Hassan finished 8th in the 5,000-meter final in a 13:30.21. Earlier that academic year during cross country, Mead finished with All-American honors at NCAA XC Nationals for the fourth consecutive year. In 2008-09, Hassan was the Big Ten Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year. He was the first athlete from Minnesota to win five individual event Big Ten titles in an academic year (cross country, 3,000 indoor, 5,000 indoor, 5,000 outdoor, 10,000 outdoor) Mead placed fourth in the 3,000 meters (7:56.15) at the 2009 NCAA indoor meet and placed sixth at the NCAA outdoor meet in the 5,000 meters. In the 2007-2008 season, Mead was the Big Ten champion in the outdoor 5,000 meters. Mead placed 18th in the 5,000 meters (14:07.44) at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials. In cross country, he was the Big Ten XC runner-up and Cross Country Freshman of the year.
High School: A 2007 graduate of Minneapolis South High School. Mead's high school coaches were Mark Gross and Melvin Alvarez. Minnesota Class AA cross country champion in 2006 running a state record time of 15:10.7 (5K). He finished fourth (15:28) at the 2006 Foot Locker Cross Country Nationals and won the Foot Locker Midwest Region title. He was a four-time all-state performer on the track, was a runner-up in the 3,200 meters (9:03.29) in 2007, and placed third in 2006. He also took sixth in the State in the 1,600 as both a junior and a senior (4:14.17). Mead finished fifth in the 2-mile run at the 2007 Nike Outdoor Nationals with a time of 8:51.23, the third-best time in Minnesota high school history.
Personal: Born June 28, 1989 to Yousuf Mead and Deka Sahal. Has a younger sister, Hana. He graduated with a degree in Communications.
