BOYS RACE RECAP: The Boys kicked off the 13th Annual Wickham Park Jamboree at 7 AM under muggy conditions and on a course that had somewhat dried out from the remnants of Tropical Storm Isaac over the last week. As expected Tristan Kattenburg and Alex Brown were up front early but surprisingly found a new harrier in their lead pack of 3 that went through the mile in roughly 5:08. Going out with Kattenberg and Brown to everyone's surprise was Xavier Walton from Titusville who came in with a respectable 1600 PR set last track season of 4:39.

Coming by the finish line area on the first loop roughly 1 1/2 Miles into the 5K, Xavier asked Alex and Tristan " if this was the finish"? A really game effort early still paid dividends as Xavier finished 6th overall in 16:59.
2 1/2 miles in, Tristan Kattenburg put a stride and a half on Brown and looked as if he was starting a long sustained push to the finish. Alex Brown regained the lead about 550 meters out from the finish according to his game plan and held off Kattenburg for the win in 16:06.

GIRLS RACE RECAP: After making huge strides since the end of the 2011 XC season, West Shore's Sarah Day was suddenly a front runner for the 2012 2A State XC Championship and was heavily touted to go head to head with the County's best, most notably defending 1A State Cross Country Champion and 3200 Meter Champion Julie Wollrath from Holy Trinity, after posting a solid 18:01.73 for the 5K on the Track at the 2012 All-Star Showdown.

By the time the Girls race was under way, the temperature had started to rise as the sun was now up and over the Pines at Wickham Park which slowed the times somewhat across the field. Taking the lead from the gun as expected was West Shore's Sarah Day and right on her heels was Sophomore Julie Wollrath. They gapped the chase pack early hitting the mile mark in 5:40. Sarah continued to do the work up front with Julie noting she was doing all she could to just hang on and be patient. Meanwhile back in the chase pack, Circle Christian's super Freshman Denae Chapman was moving up nicely and found herself squarely in 3rd with Christina Hamilton, Beth Whalen, Liz Harper and Nini Li rounding out the third chase pack.

L-R Sarah Day, Julie Wollrath 2 1/2 Mile Mark
Reaching the 2 1/2 mile mark, Sarah Day still continued to lead but it was very evident that with a little over a half mile to go, Julie Wollrath was no longer just holding on and was showing a resurgence and "Eye of the Tiger" type demeanor that has served her well in winning 3 State Championships over the last 18 months.
Sarah commented that for the first time she was a front runner versus chaser and that her legs felt somewhat heavy and the normal strength she is accustomed to was somewhat lacking over the latter portion of the race.
Julie slowly pulled even then gapped Sarah for the win in 18:30. Day was 2nd in a huge Cross Country PR bettering her previous 19:15 by 38 seconds. Denae Chapman finished just shy of her for 3rd in 19:31.
Name Age Time
Julie Wollrath 15 18:30
Sarah Day 17 18:37
Denae Chapman 14 19:31
Liz Harper 17 19:47
Christina Hamilton 17 19:47
Beth Whalen 26 19:51
Nina Li 16 19:51
Meredith VanVeen 27 19:55

Saturday's Wickham Park Jamboree will tell us a lot about how the summer training went for a lot of these runners and teams.
TAKE 3:
1- We've heard really good things about how Senior Sarah Day from West Shore HS has steadily progressed since last Cross Country season. After a great Junior Track Season where she went 10:53 in the 3200 and 18:01 for 5K, Sarah is presently ranked #1 in John Dey's 2A Girls Fab Five Rankings. Will she deliver in this early season match-up with the County's best runners and show she is one of the State's best harriers?
2- The Holy Trinity Boys are ranked #1 in John Dey's 1A Boys Team Fab Five Rankings and Cocoa Beach is ranked #2 in the 2A Fab Five. Just how strong are these heavily ranked Boys teams?
3- Who will win the individual Boys race? Holy Trinity's top 3 of Tristan Kattenberg, Cole Oliver and Alex Brown all looked good a few weeks back in a local 5K - I Run For Pizza -with Tristan edging out Alex in the last 50 meters. Cocoa Beach's Corey Sayyeau is ranked heavily in #2A and will be in the lead pack for individual honors.

Holy Trinity's Coach Butler's Take:
This Saturday I expect nearly all the teams from Brevard County plus a couple from Orlando and Indian River County for our 13th Annual Wickham Park Jamboree. We never charge an entry fee but this year are asking for each runner to donate a couple of cans of food for the local food bank. With 400 runners, we could do a lot of good for the area. As far as competition is concerned, I think you will not see any fast times as the park has been hit very heavy lately with rain and so as of now most of the course is under water. It will be interesting to see who did their homework over the summer and put in the miles.
