Early Outdoor Season Results

It has been several weeks since the indoor season finished and the outdoor season is slowly starting up. Several big names just opened their season last weekend, including Conor McCullough (Princeton) and freshly crowned NCAA indoor champion Jeneva McCall (Southern Illinois).

McCullough, who skipped the NCAA indoor championships in order to focus on the outdoor season, had an impressive throw of 71.47m (234'6") in Florida on friday. That is his second best mark ever, just behind his personal best he set at the Irish Championships last August. The mark also easily leads the NCAA so far this year, although many top throwers have not yet started their seasons. One newcomer on the men's side who might challenge Conor this year is Hungarian Daniel Szabo (USC). Szabo also started his season on Friday with a throw 67.10m (220'2"). Szabo has a personal best of 70.86m from last year and placed 5th behind McCullough at the 2010 World Junior Championships. Division II Champion Ryan Loughney (Ashland) also started his season with a throw of 67.43m (221'3") over the weekend.

After utterly dominating the indoor competition, Jeneva McCall looks on track to also capture an NCAA outdoor title. But she will face a little more competition outdoors. McCall started her season with a throw of 69.39m (227'8"), less than a foot off of her personal best. Jenny Ozorai (USC), who did not compete indoors, already threw 68.08m (223'4") earlier this month, and several other throwers McCall faced are more competitive outdoors. Ozorai's teammate Marissa Minderler (USC) also had a strong start to the season with two meets over 64 meters and a new personal best of 64.83m (212'8") in March.
