Tyler Genovese (Wisconsin-Eau Claire) came through with a big throw to take the surprise win at the NCAA Division III championships this weekend. Genovese enetered the competition as the fourth seed with a personal best of 19.41 meters and he sat in that same position after the preliminary rounds. But on his fourth attempted he added nearly two feet to that best with a throw of 20.01 meters. Pete Delzer (Wisconsin-Oshkosh) improved in the final round to come within inches of Genovese, but his throw was enough to hold on for the win.

As expected, the women's favorite had an easier time coming through with the win. But Alexia Child (Wisconsin-Oshkosh) not only won, she also did it with a huge personal best of nearly two feet. Leading by just 1 cm after the final rounds, Child improved in the fifth round to 19.55m and ended up winning the competition by nearly one meter. Amanda Gricus (Westfield State) also threw a big personal best for second place. Brittany Frederick (Wisconsin-Eau Claire) nearly got a personal best en route to third place.
