Weekend Results for 5/12/12

Nearly every top collegiate thrower was in action this weekend as conference championships took place across the country. More and more suprises are emerging on the women's side as we get closer to the NCAA Championships. Alena Krechyk (Kansas) threw an impressive 69.02m to win the Big 12 title. After a first round foul, she threw her big personal best and passed her remaining attempts. She is now close to the NCAA lead and one of just three collegiate throwers to break 69 meters this year. Jeneva McCall (Southern Illinois), who has been perhaps the most consistent of the front runners, once again threw 68.82m to beat Brittany Smith (Illinois State) for the MVC conference title. Smith threw her second straight personal best and has not improved her mark by four meters in the past few weeks to 67.91m. On the west coast, Melissa Minderler also was the surprise winner at the Pac 12 Championships, also with a new personal best of 67.35m. On the men's side NCAA leader Conor McCullough (Princeton) easily outdistanced other thrwoers this weekend. Alexander Ziegler (Virginia Tech) threw just 68.81m. Jeremy Postin (Florida) had another solid weekend, and Quentin Mege (Minnesota) threw a personal best of 67.08m to win the Big 10 title. There was also some exciting action in the pro ranks, with many of the top women facing off at Georgia Tech. Gwen Berry broke 70 meters for the second time this year to upset US indoor champion Amber Campbell. Keelin Godsey and Brittany Riley took third and fourth among stiff competition. Out in California Aubrey Baxter continued her impressive season with a personal best of 69.92m to beat Amy Haapanen, who also broke 69 meters for the first time last month.
