MINNESOTA, Minn. The men's and women's cross country team were both put to the test on Saturday at the Roy Griak Invitational. The second-ranked Michigan State Spartans won the women's race as Southern Utah won the men's race. lt;br /> lt;br />Mike Hardy lead the men's team to a 13th place finish. Hardy finished 16th place covering the 8,000 meter course in 25:23. Hardy was up with the top group of runners until the last mile when the hot weather humidity took its toll. Trevor Ricks was just two spots back in 18th, continues to have a great start to his senior season. Tyler Robinson was the third runner for the Wildcats finishing 93rd, while Preston Johnson finished 108th. lt;br /> lt;br />"Mike and Trevor both ran well today on a really hilly course," WSU head coach Paul Pilkington said. "We had some interesting things happen today as Mike got effected by the heat and Tip got tripped up and couldn't finish the race. Preston had a great race but had to crawl across the finish line after falling with 20 meters." lt;br /> lt;br />The women's team was lead a different runner for the third straight race as Hailey Ricks was the top finisher for the Wildcats. The Wildcats placed 19th in the women's race with 560 points. Ricks finished 84th while covering the 6,000 meter course in 22:54 while Ellie Child finished 98th with a time of 23:05. Jamie Stokes was the third runner by placing 112th, Taylor Cox finished 129th, and Paige Dilmore was 143rd. lt;br /> lt;br />"Women ran pretty well and the freshmen ran really well for their first 6k," Pilkington said. "The women's field was really loaded but I feel that our team is going to run better at the end of the season." lt;br /> lt;br />The Wildcats will return to the course when they head to the Adidas Wisconsin Invitational on October 17th.
