Cross country: Girls harriers switch to 5K

What: 2012 UIL Cross Country rule changes

Class 5A & 4A Girls: Race distances will change from 3,200 meters (approximately two miles) to 5,000 meters (approximately three miles).

Class 3A, 2A and A: Remain at 3,200 meters.

School district superintendents from across the state voted in favor to increase University Interscholastic League Class 5A and 4A girls cross country from 3,200 to 5,000 meters beginning next season.

"I am very pleased to see the girls going to 5K in 2012," Cy-Fair coach Tom Kennedy said. "The increased distance provides a window of opportunity to the majority of girls, particularly those who lack the speed to be competitive in the two-mile event.
