Glades rules 300 hurdles

Dillard’s Jamika Glades, headed for the University of Miami, won the 300 hurdles in a personal-best 41.79 seconds at the 3A meet.

Dillard’s Jamika Glades and Hallandale’s Kyri Tabor made a triumphant return to the top of the Class 3A state track finals podium at Hodges Stadium on Friday.

Unlike Tabor, an Alabama signee who won her second state title in a row in the 400 meters (54.26 seconds), the University of Miami-bound Glades won the 300 hurdles for the first time in a personal-best 41.79 seconds after falling a photo finish short of a successful title defense in the 100 hurdles.

“I had to keep the 100 hurdles out of my mind,” Glades said. “I got out hard in the 300 hurdles and attacked each and every hurdle. I used shorter strides around the curve, pumped my arms and stayed in attack mode like my coach told me.”

Winning gold in the 300 hurdles eased the disappointment of Glades clocking 14.24 to finish second to Pine Forest’s Johna’ Whitaker (14.20) in the 100 hurdles despite Glades’ late lean at the finish line.

Running in Lane 5, Tabor kept things interesting through the first 200 meters before taking control around the final curve to win in a personal-best and Florida No. 3 54.26, ahead of Dillard’s Shakima Wimbley (55.11). As Tabor crossed the finish line she pointed her index finger to the sky, indicating she’s still No. 1.

“This means a lot to me,” Tabor said. “I wasn’t doing good the whole year. I had to make my move with about 150 meters to go. I just had to run and leave it all on the track. This seals my career.”
