What Parents Should Think About Before Succumbing To College Sports Scholarship Dreams

As parents, we teach our children that they can be anything they want to be. Then, later, we deal with their resentment, and the subsequent therapy bills, when they learn that, in fact, they cannot be anything they want to be. Or, as happens with many sports parents, we put off any possible resentment by doubling down on the pitching lessons and travel leagues to ensure that our child gets that scholarship we’ve been dreaming of for our child since kindergarten, or before.

The ideal of a sports scholarship is ingrained in many parents’ heads very early and deeply, such as the ones who, upon learning from my wife that my 9-year-old son and 6-year-old daughter are in a bowling league, immediately remarked, “Oh, there are scholarships for that!” Getting a college sports scholarship is much like the old advertising line used by state lotteries: to win, you have to play. However, it’s also like a line lotteries would never use in their advertising: most of you would get a better return flushing your money straight down the toilet.
