The Agony and Ecstasy of Olympic Trials

Chris Solinsky had a prime spot at Hayward Field for the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials on Friday night: Section M, Row 1, Seat 27. Just as important, Solinsky was protected by the grandstand roof as a cold rain fell for the start of the men’s 10,000-meter final.

Matt Tegenkamp and Brent Vaughn, pals from the Oregon Track Club, were warming up below, both contenders for qualifying spots. Not so long ago, Solinsky, 27, would have been considered a favorite. These days, he is relegated to the role of spectator. “A cheerleader for my teammates,” he said. He huddled with his wife, Amy, and braced for the race to begin without him.
